EDEN Organic Black & Tan Gomasio is a blend of organically grown black and tan sesame seeds dry roasted and ground with roasted sea salt. The seeds are natural gas, infrared, dry roasted releasing their oil then slowly ground with oven roasted EDEN Sea Salt.

Gomasio is traditional sesame salt used for centuries in Japan. Goma means sesame, and shio means salt. In Eastern cultures raw salt was rarely used on food. Condiments such as gomasio were used at the table. When hot sesame is ground with salt the seed's oil coats and melts the salt, melding and mellowing it for full flavor with less salt consumption.

The patriarch of macrobiotics, George Ohsawa, recommended gomasio in the 1960s as a replacement of raw table salt. This popularized gomasio throughout Europe and the Americas as the healthy alternative. Mr. Ohsawa's wisdom is especially meaningful as most Americans consume, and have consumed far too much sodium.

Gomasio made with black sesame seed is called 'kuro goma' and is highly valued for its flavor and health benefits. Throughout Asia black sesame is considered a digestive aid. The lignans, sesamin, sesamol, and sesamolin are antioxidant compounds found in sesame believed to benefit the vascular system and keep hair healthy and dark.

Including sesame with meals provides high quality protein, calcium, iron, and a superior range of amino acids including methionine, tryptophan and lysine that are often missing in vegetable protein sources. A one teaspoon serving of gomasio is low sodium with 80 mg per serving. All five flavors of EDEN Organic Gomasio are low fat and cholesterol free.

Sesame Sesamum indicum is the oldest known herbaceous plant grown for its seed. It originated in Africa where it is known as 'benniseed' and 'sim-sim'. Used throughout prehistory sesame was an important food in Mediterranean and Eastern civilizations, and continues to be so today. They are often called seeds of longevity. Greek and Turkish soldiers carried them in their rations. The Egyptians milled sesame for a flour used in breads and many dishes. The Romans ground them into paste to spread on bread. The expression 'open sesame' indicates entrance into splendor and abundance. Sprinkling gomasio sesame salt on food imparts abundant, rich flavor.

The triple sea water washed EDEN sea salt comes from the environmentally protected historic salt marshes of Algarve, Portugal. They have supplied the entire known world with sea salt since ancient times.

EDEN Organic Black & Tan Gomasio is delicious sprinkled on whole grains, pasta, salads, hot cereals, and vegetables. Great on popcorn and corn on the cob in place of salt. Add it to salad dressings and marinades.
