A Southern favorite and the centerpiece of the classic dish Hoppin’ John. They are referred to in the old saying, “Rice for riches, peas for peace,“ and folklore has it that they bring good luck. Black eyed peas are a medium, round, beige bean with a distinctive dark ‘eye,’ and mild earthy flavor. They are native to China and came to the American South via West Africa through the West Indies. Popular in Southern cooking, they are delicious as a side dish, and in soups, salads, and casseroles. No salt added. Packed in BPA, BPS, and phthalate free cans since the 90s.
