Raincoast trading was founded in 1995 by a fishing family who wanted to see their high quality local products preserved in a way that would be accessible to more people. They wanted to show consumers accustomed to low quality imported canned products that there was a different way – that quality, pride and sustainability produce a product vastly superior to what they were used to.
Since 2013, Raincoast Trading has been part of St. Jean’s Cannery and Smokehouse, which had been its principal packer. For nearly 60 years, St. Jean’s has been a trusted part of seafood in BC and on Vancouver Island, providing high-quality smoking, hand packing and canning in Nanaimo.
St. Jean’s is the last remaining dedicated seafood cannery in British Columbia and use their expertise to focus on local, sustainable seafood products. Since 2015, St. Jean’s has been majority owned by the Nuu-chah-nulth, a group of west coast first nations committed to stewardship and prosperity of their ancestral seafood resources.
